An itinerary to discover the most fascinating villages of the Borbera Valley with an e-bike route between breathtaking views and unique experiences.
Note
An itinerary which will take us to Valico di San Fermo, a pass of the Ligurian Apennines at 1,129m close to Monte di San Fermo along the road which connects Liguria with the Borbera Valley, an important branch of the Salt Road. Pick up e-bike at Cabella Ligure and led by our expert cycle tour guide set off to discover the Borbera Valley.
First stop-off point is the hamlet of Teo for a sunny yellow saffron experience! This small hamlet is the birthplace of Pope Francis’ grandmother.
Visit a farm which produces the typical beans of Val Borbera, a native local bean of large size with a tasty pulp which was disappearing but has been skilfully recovered. The farm also specialises in the cultivation of saffron. Here, at 750m, it has found the ideal place to grow. Saffron biscuits but also grappa made from the Timorasso grape variety with the addition of Saffron pistils will make you fall in love immediately with the Borbera Valley
Stop for a snack in an agriturismo of Dova.
Through unspoiled nature, set off for the Valico of San Fermo as far as the Chapel of San Fermo on the border between Liguria and Piemonte, at an altitude of 1177m a.s.l. From the chapel you can admire the Ligurian Sea, the Apennines, the Western Alps and, on the clearest days, the Monviso. The return journey will pass through Casalbusone and Gordena, typical villages like those of the Ligurian hinterland, built with local stone and surrounded by beech, oak and chestnut woods.
Before returning the e-bike, stop off in a very special baking workshop: here, under the guidance of a knowledgeable artisan using stoneground flours from ancient and local wheat varieties, the secrets of baking will be learnt
first-hand.
