Description

Saliceto is now a village on the border between Piedmont and Liguria off major communication routes, but it was once a very busy road junction in the direction of Asti, Alba, Savona, Finale, Albenga. These ancient roads were controlled by the Templars. From Northern Europe these roads led to Italy and joined the Via Francigena and numerous no less important routes: those which transited through Saliceto include the Magistra Langarum or Salt Road, which climbed from the Ligurian ports inland (travelled by high-ranking personalities and high priests) and the Jacobean route for those who came from Val Padana, starting from Milan, or further away from Austria or from Hungary.
The Marquis Castle houses the frescoes attributable to Taddeo di Bartolo and Barnaba da Modena, in the late 14th century. The Church of San Lorenzo is one of the four renaissance churches in Piedmont. It is a compendium of precise symbols and references which range from gnostic esotericism to the pre-Christian mysteries and above all relating to the world of the Templars, such as Hermes Trismegistus and Baphomet. The Church of Sant ‘Agostino, considered the Sistine Chapel of Langhe, hosts a precious cycle of frescoes in the ancient chapel, datable to the second half of the 15th century. As also the Church of San Martino topped by the beautiful romanesque bell tower. The cycle of frescoes in the apse and in the presbytery are attributable to the second half of the 15th century. One of the scenes features Saint Martin cutting his cloak to give it to a poor man. The possible stop in a restaurant and tasting of typical traditional dishes is considered an integral part of the cultural exploration of the area.
