SPIRITS AND ROOTS (CANTIERE IN CANTINA)
Altavilla Monferrato
Description
An evocative journey through the finest local agricultural produce and traditional specialties - much more than simple pleasures for the palate. These products are the purest expression of biodiversity, artisan dedication and local rural knowledge. This is not a story to be told, but an experience to enjoy with all your senses. Walking through nature and visiting local producers, discovering age-old traditions and uncovering the secrets of skills handed down through generations, means connecting deeply with the identity of the land. It is an invitation to rediscover the value of slow living, craftsmanship and a close connection with the land, where outstanding local produce becomes landscape, culture and unforgettable memories.
In the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape, two special stops introduce you to products that embody the true essence of the area: olive trees, which are back to populate the hills after centuries of absence, and grape must, a precious by-product of the region’s long-established winemaking tradition and an essential ingredient in the production of fine spirits.
Arrive at the historic Mazzetti d'Altavilla distillery and enjoy a guided tour to discover the different stages of production, surrounded by captivating aromas and sensations. The visit continues inside the atmospheric barrel room, where fine spirits slowly mature in prestigious wooden casks, developing their distinctive aromas and character. Then step into the fascinating "Galleria della Grappa", an exhibition space displaying historic bottles of grappa and other spirits. The visit ends at the Enoteca Monferrina, a charming underground wine cellar where, in a warm and welcoming environment, guests can enjoy a sensory tasting experience featuring local specialties paired with Grappa, Spirits, Liqueurs, Brandy, as well as Fruit in Liqueur and other tempting delicacies. Visitors can also explore the Votive Chapel "La Rotonda", a magnificent architectural gem that remains consecrated to this day. Built in 1808, the chapel stands in the grounds of the Magione Mazzetti d' Altavilla.
Travelling through the gently rolling hills, you reach Olivola, a picturesque village in a panoramic setting, characterized by the local stone known as pietra da cantoni. It is into this stone that the infernots were carved, the underground chambers that have become a symbol of the area, and precious legacy of its rural tradition. These small hidden treasures are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape.
Olivola has become Piedmont’s first Oil Town, and the olive oil produced here has earned its place among the finest Oils in Italy. This achievement is also thanks to passionate producers such as Anita, whose Azienda Agricola Oliviera produces a multi-award-winning extra virgin olive oil.
Strolling among the olive trees, you will discover traditional cultivation techniques, learn about the different varieties of olives and how they are harvested. Above all, Anita will introduce you to the characteristics of extra virgin olive oil, its uses in the kitchen and its health benefits.
During the walk you will reach Big Bench #146, positioned among the farm's olive trees. Its golden color recalls the warm tones of olive oil. The big benches were created by the designer Chris Bangle (Big Bench Community) and can be found at panoramic locations throughout the area, inviting visitors to rediscover the landscape and experience once again the sense of wonder of being a child.
