Description
The town of Alassio, one of the most famous resorts on the Ligurian Riviera, started out as a fisherman's village and its origins are found walking among the colourful houses close to the Saracen Tower, built as a watchtower and to defend it from possible invasions from the sea, and in the characteristic "budello", the long typical Ligurian street which runs parallel to the sea.
We will take you along intimate and peaceful routes to discover a scenic coastline and along the ancient Roman roads which connected the north to the sea, engineering work of the Roman Empire and trade routes on which cities like Acqui Terme and Libarna were built.

Program

Day 1

Arrive in Alassio. Our journey starts with the walk along the mule track for Moglio (itinerary E - 6.6 km - elevation gain of 276m): this itinerary is suited to all levels of walkers and will take you to the hamlet of Moglio, an ancient village once inhabited by local fishermen. Here, in early August, the local SOMS organises the Sagra della Ventre di Tonno a traditional dish of the region branded De.Co. The origins of this dish go back to between the late 19th and early 20th century, when the tuna workers of Moglio transferred seasonally to the tuna fisheries of Sardinia, Sicily and Calabria. Here, the tuna workers were more involved with cutting and cooking rather than fishing the exquisite red tuna, which was fished abundantly in my sea over the past centuries. The ‘ventre’, namely the stomach of the tuna salted and dried, was added to their wages. From here, the origins of the special recipe of ‘ventre in umido’ (stewed tuna belly) which is prepared to this day, following the ancient tradition, and each family jealously guards its own version of the recipe. A surprising speciality that will win you over.
Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in centrally located hotel.

Day 2

After breakfast, another delightful itinerary to enjoy breathtaking views and discover the Via Iulia Augusta which connected Alassio to Albenga (itinerary E - 6 km -elevation gain 260m).
Built in 13 BC at the behest of Emperor Augustus to connect Rome to Southern Gaul, the via Iulia Augusta is one of the most picturesque naturalistic historical routes of Liguria. Starting from the Church of Santa Croce, in a scenic position over the port of Alassio and baia del sole, the Roman walk travels the hillside along the coastline giving picture postcard views and an immersion in the Mediterranean vegetation. In the last stretch of the route, walk on a section of paved road typical of the Roman period as far as the ruins of funeral monuments of the Roman city of Albingaunum and an archaeological area with an amphitheatre of the 2nd century, the only construction of note of this kind to have been built
in Western Liguria.
Return to Alassio and free time to try one or more relax or glamour experiences.
Dinner with the fishermen: dine on the quay or on a boat moored in the harbour with a set menu of freshly caught local fish. The fish is cooked simply and originally following the recipes of the Ligurian tradition and accompanied by wine, oil and products of the hinterland.
Overnight accommodation in centrally located hotel.

Day 3

Set off towards southern Piedmont to discover the town of Acqui Terme along the Via Aemila Scauri, located in the site of the Roman Aquae Statiellae, known since antiquity for the presence of rich thermal springs. Here the sulphur-rich water bubbles out in the city centre at 75° in the marble aedicule of the Bollente fountain. Walk along the streets of the centre as far as the Cathedral of the Assumption, which is home to a small masterpiece, the triptych of Our Lady of Monserrat by the Spanish painter Bartolomè Bermejo. Descend to Piazza Italia admiring the scenic fountain of the nymphs to the Grand Hotel Nuove Terme and its historic Liberty-style café. Guided tour of the Archaeological Museum in the Castle of the Paleologi. The walk continues to the Bagni area to the imposing Roman arches. During the walk, stop off at the Regional Wine Shop "Terme & Vino" to taste the local wines accompanied by local food.
Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in centrally located hotel.

Day 4

After breakfast, transfer to Serravalle Scrivia and last stage along the Roman roads to discover the ancient city of Libarna built in 149 BC along the Via Postumia which connected Aquileia to Genoa. It still retains important buildings like the theatre, the spa, and the classical layout of Roman constructions.
Our guide will explain the history of this city, strategic trading hub together with the story of the ancient flavours and the production/trading of wine arriving to our days with the "Archeosapori", those foods and products which, adapted and transformed over the centuries, are still present on our tables (project realised in collaboration with the Architectural Heritage Office)
At the end of the visit, sweet stop in the centre of Serravalle in the pastry shop where the ‘gallette’ and "tessellae" of spelt, the ‘bacio of Libarna' and the 'Torta di Catone' a cheesecake with a 2000-year-old history have been made for generations: flavours which arrive from a distant past but are still able to engage and excite travellers.
