Note
An ebike itinerary through the Grue and Curone Valleys to discover the local food and wine excellences, art, and lush nature of these valleys.
From Costa Vescovato to Garbagna, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with medieval origins and a strong Ligurian influence. The heart of the town is Piazza Doria with its four horse chestnut trees. From here, narrow, colorful streets unravel, leading to the Castle or visiting the Parish Church of San Giovanni Decollato, which houses an important work by Guglielmo Caccia, known as Moncalvo. Garbagna is also famous for its Bella di Garbagna cherry, a Slow Food Presidium cherry variety with a distinctive, deep red color and a very crisp texture. Indeed, when preserved in alcohol, it retains its consistency and integrity. The itinerary continues towards Dernice and then towards San Sebastiano Curone: the village was a hub of trade between Genoa and the State of Milan, and this vocation is reflected in its urban layout of narrow cobbled streets and tall multi-story houses, some with artistically carved stone portals. Worth a visit is the Archivio Pittor Giani, which commemorates the work of the neoclassical painter Felice Giani, born here in 1758. Considered one of the key figures in the cultural scene of his time and a highly sought-after pioneer of the modern concept of interior design, he received commissions from Napoleon Bonaparte and the leading figures of the nobility of the time.
In autumn, San Sebastiano hosts one of the most important truffle fairs in the province, with tasting stands and menus dedicated to the king of the table. Optional truffle hunting experience available for an additional fee.
Leaving San Sebastiano, we head towards Fabbrica Curone for a visit to an important dairy producing Montebore cheese. Through its work, it champions the project to enhance the area's historical and gastronomic identity, and through the long-distance adoption of a sheep, it creates a solidarity network to safeguard ancient crafts, animal breeds, and agricultural production. After the tasting, we return to San Sebastiano and then to Momperone, home to the valley's only working watermill, then Casasco, Montegioco, and finally Costa Vescovato.
During the tour, you can also include a visit to the Casasco Observatory (during activities) or a tasting at a winery or brewery (for an additional fee).
